Tourism in Middlesex COunty
Tourism & Visitor Economy
Tourism is an important part of Middlesex County’s economy. Visitor activity supports local businesses, generates local tax revenue, strengthens the hospitality and marine sectors, and helps sustain the small towns & villages, waterfront experiences, events, and community traditions that make Middlesex County unique.
Through the Explore Middlesex tourism program and regional and state partnerships, the Middlesex County EDA works to strengthen visibility, encourage visitation, and connect tourism activity back to local economic opportunity.
Tourism as Economic Development
Why Tourism Matters in Middlesex
Tourism is one of Middlesex County’s most practical economic development tools. It builds on assets already present in the County — waterways, marinas, working waterfronts, rural landscapes, local history, small towns, events, and locally owned businesses.
Visitor spending supports restaurants, lodging properties, campgrounds, marinas, retail shops, attractions, events, and service-based businesses. It also helps generate local revenue through transient occupancy tax, meals tax, sales tax, and other visitor-supported activity.
For a rural coastal county like Middlesex, tourism offers a way to strengthen the economy while preserving community character. It supports local businesses and tax revenue while placing relatively limited long-term demand on public infrastructure and services compared to many forms of large-scale growth.
STRATEGIC DOCUMENT
Middlesex County Tourism Action Plan
Developed in partnership with the Virginia Tourism Corporation and adopted by the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors in 2025, the Tourism Action Plan guides the EDA’s approach to growing visitor activity, strengthening local tourism businesses, and connecting tourism to broader economic development goals.

Transient Occupany Tax
Lodging tax revenue is one of the clearest local indicators of overnight visitation, and helps fund the work of the Middlesex County EDA. FY21–FY24 trend below shows recovery from pandemic-era lows and continued growth in overnight visitation.
Lodging tax revenue reflects the direct connection between overnight visitation, tourism marketing, and local economic development funding.
A note on seasonal population: Middlesex County also has a significant seasonal population. Seasonal housing is identified in the EDA Strategic Plan as an important part of the local economy, with seasonal residents, second-home owners, campers, and visitors all contributing to demand for local restaurants, retail, marinas, events, services, and experiences.
